READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL ! ! ! ! ! WORK IN PROGRESS ! ! ! ! br> Julian Rutherford born the same year as the release of the 1st home computer (tandy trs80) which his dad was amongst the 1st owners of he began his life long involvement in the world of computers + music at a young age.. Even in his childhood Joolz was showing his rhythmic creativity, creating his own drum kits from house hold objects (mostly kitchen)...... Heavily amplifying and distorting sounds with his fathers old Sony Reel 2 Reel, using the microphone inside the sounds box of an nylon string acoustic guitar to make a fierce electric sound. Ingenuity. He soon found others who shared his passion for making sounds, At primary school he learned some basic guitar chords and riffs. blues scales etc. The first casette tapes he bought were Micheal Jackson 'Bad' and MegaMix 90s Dance Compilation.... He used to spend time recording songs from radio onto tape and dubbing his own voice over between songs... making birthday complilation or 'mix' tapes for friends and family By the time he reached secondary school he and his friends were practicing and perfecting a wide range of styles.... Rock n Roll, Punk and Heavy Metal were the main order of the day.... Hi energy was always a key feature of his early musical projects.. regularly rehearsing with his drummer and guitarist friends... always at maximum volume! He had his 1st chance to play on a real drum kit, learning from mr2sticks@hotmail.com the drummer for his band Seed.... He learnt a lot about rhythms and drum patterns from this amazingly talented drummer... A full drum kit, a range of Keyboards, Guitars and FX units. were the toys of choice for him.... He received no 'classical' musical training, and after some experimentaion with different instruments, the bass guitar became his instrument of choice buying his own Fender Precision soon after seeing it in the 2nd hand papers... His 1st major band Seed formed in 199x was quick to become a local favourite.... with regular packed gigs at Yorks most respected live music venue 'Fibbers' They were always called upon to support visiting artists... as there headline shows always packed the venue with energetic thirsty students... The raw intensity of the band was soon picked up and after competing in battle of the bands he got his 1st glimpse in to a professional studio... recording of an EP.... upon leaving secondary education, eventually the bands singer moved to a different town due to university commitments.... they kept pleasing there loyal crowd with there guitarist taking over singing duties a move to the city centre provided joolz with a wider and more much more frequent exposure to local and visiting talent .... around this time he saw his 1st electronic music performance by Charlie Floyd who also played in a guitar based band but was excited by the electronic revolution... Subway feat the Mighty Mossadon - LINK... Instantly hypnotized by the flashing lights and seemingly magic interactive control provided by the mere muting of a BD and the crowd response Joolz knew this was for him.... until this time he thought of electronics and music as very seperate entities..... having been brought up with a great knowledge of computers inside out learning Basic, C++ and pascal programming languages at a very early age through his dad... he also had been exposed to the hardware side of technology seeing his father upgrade, build and cutomize computers from a young age... rebirth released by Propellerheads makers of the now hugely popular Reason software, gave him a chance to play with virtual copies of Rolands's old vintage kit the TB303 + 808 + later 909 Drum Machines the live manipulation of sounds commonly refered to as tweaking was second nature to him Tweaking - tweaking refers to fine-tuning or adjusting a complex system, usually an electronic device. Tweaks are any small modifications intended to improve a system. so as soon as he saw a Roland-MC303 'Groove Box' that was rarely rented out by local sound & lighting company he managed to persuade a friend working for them to sell it to him cheap... This gave him not only access to more sounds such as : 303, 808, 909, Jupiter, and Juno sounds. It is a sequencer arranger and looks a lot like the original 303's and 808's... Not to mention it includes real-time Filter Cutoff, resonance, panning and arpeggiator. it also alowed him to perform live using this equipment without having to cart a then very large computer set up with big monitor etc. many hours were spent hypnotized by the flashing lights as he experimented with creating grooves of many varieties.... at this time he'd never seen a live DJ.... new little of dance music / rave culture.... and only smoked 'erb never having experience what the MaDMAn had to offer.... I chance encounter on a sunny walk home down by the river from bandpractice led the now dreadlocked joolz to meet a 'real dred' rastafarian. this quickly led to a spontaneous Dub reggae jam session this provided a whole new angle to joolz's, musical thinking....... he learnt a lot about dub musical meditation from this experience.... from the deep repetitve basslines underpinning the tracks this was soon reflected in his own electronic compositions.... creating dubs of various styles.... A local underground venue known as 'The Arts Centre' was run by a tight knit community of university students pushing dancemusic with there forward thinking music nights... www.freakin.org This is where joolz 1st experienced a DJ... cutting and splicing tracks and especially the sheer control the DJ had over the crowd using EQ techniques etc.... Just was instantly hooked more tweaking! until this point he thouht that DJ's 'only' played other peoples music and had no real skills of there own..... at the time Orbital were his main inspiration in electronic music.... there raw yet uplifting sound captivated his senses.... be believed that producing your own music and performing it live was the only 'credible' way to go........... after solo performances at a friends birthday parties etc. he soon formed a collabrative band with 'quirky kirky' who had an MC505 they'd jam grooves together and push the boundries of electronic music... defying catagorization.... except maybe acid when kirky was too involved! one particularly successful performance attracted the attention of local upstart DJ Nick Bryan (now known as badly dressed boy).... he started performing with Joolz+kirky under the new name JNK collective.... JNK only lasted for a short time as Nik opened joolz's ears to new pastures... house and all it's incarnations. NickBryan and Joolz formed a tight friendship... with nick showing joolz the ropes on the 1's and 2's.... eventually persuading him to start to learn to DJ as well as produce.... the motivating factor being mostly the learning about the many genres + subgenres of dance/electronic music up to this point he had no idea of the differnet and vast world of vinyl..... the closing down sale of legendary 'Depth Charge records' was the occasion when joolz bought his 1st vinyl's trying to think back what was purchased.... only 1 remains clear in his memory Tipper's Music For SoundSystems.... a seriously bass heavy production having already learned the basics of mixing from Nik he was soon hooked regulary collecting vinyl and djing in local bars + pubs long before even owning his own set of Technics 1210s traveling with a bag of records to every house party, free party and rave he could find to sneak his way onto the turntables to refine his mixing talents... knowing full well that this was the best practice he could get.... in front of a crowd... watching there reactions.... always looking for an oppertunity to practice, he'd even go to parties where he knew nobody at all.... attracted by the sounds and people leaking from the front doors of the house.... he'd make his way in and head straight for the turntables..... nod his head to whomever was playing.... wait until the time seemed right... and ask the DJ if he could 'spin a couple' once on the turntables it was hard to get him off ! his head turning mixing skills soon had people asking who he was.... where he was from etc.... through this constant exposure to everyone who liked to party.... he soon learned about many styles of music a regular at nights such as 'Less Stress' + 'Normal', he got to see a wide variety of famous underground DJs... of which he knew none... he simply danced and absorbed the vibrations later to meet up with the local DJ hero's such as Rich Clarke + Leo Clayton who were spinning at these legendary parties. and got to spin with them on the other side of the turntables! at freeparties etc.... there influence on him was obvious.... and they could remember seeing Jooz in the crowd and thinking .... "that guy fuckin LOVES this music! " TechHouse.... that fine line between house and techno where anything can and will happen taking in influences as diverse as dub, disco, techno and soul, breakbeats and anything! constant exposure in the local seen soon began turning heads especially at freeparties and club after parties.... where the crowd was most 'open' to dance music! he soon got to be known as the wizard or tweakster when mixing :-D his record collection rapidly expanded from 10 pieces of vinyl to 1000s in only a few years other HUGELY influential local DJs from this time were the Pigeonhold crew namely Karen & Gid - of Normal fame.... at afterparties he was exposed to everystyle imaginable mixed fused and bruised by these two married highly respected DJs Karen now runs Intech CarlCox's record label... they would mix the latest underground house and breaks sounds with the likes of Micheal Jackson and old raregroove and funk... the only local night club 'the arts centre' closed down in 199? after this he had to travel further afield to get his fix of jackin a crowd..... Karen + Gid had moved to London by this point as Pigeonhold they 'found' DJ Mikey Goodfella - now known as Micheal Morph (file under music) a Nottingham based DJ .... who shared the same ethos.... not being bound by genres... no music policy apart from quality... + quantity HEDST8 - Production and DJ team..... by this time Joolz and Nik had aquired a new member to there team.... BenGinger.... or uncle ben as we called him.... the 3 of them spent a lot of time working together.... making mixes .... remixing tunes ..... and such at this time they were mostly spinning DrumNBass and the nu growing scene of Breakbeat his production skills were also coming along.... having bought himself the legendary MPC2000 as well as a KORG MS2000R (as used by...) he wrote house breaks and drum n bass of varying flavours he'd regularly go and watch the pigeonhold creteam up For his fix of fresh beats he had to travel to clubs such as thebomb here he was s guest slot in Nottingham's very well respected club night 'Breakdown'' @ The Bomb..... the bomb was renowned for its soundsystem and playing host to almost every top dj hero's of his such as ........pretty much everyone! his 1st gig there was a raving success with the promoters Tony Global + Mikey Goodfella inviting them back the following week! this time they were given the 2nd room to themselves all night to party They soon worked there way up and played in the main room twice before the club was sadly shut down..... playing at the bomb.... with big c - andy cato - groove armada... now closed down - www.thebomb.co.uk leeds, hull, criminally unreleased - azzido the bass vs roni size represent - remix 'who told you you could azzido the drum n bass ?
